The relationship between humans and Materia is complex; while it empowers individuals to perform miracles, its natural formation relies on the planet's spiritual energy. Mako Reactors pump Lifestream but do not extract Materia directly; instead, Materia must be mined from caves or synthesized in labs. This duality defines the central conflict of the era: using the power of the world to survive versus preserving the world itself. Ancient texts suggest that only those with a pure spirit can fully harness the potential of certain rare Materia without being consumed by their own desires.

The wind howled through Midgar's ruins, carrying the metallic tang of ozone and rust. Cloud gripped his greatsword, feeling the familiar, throbbing warmth of the green sphere embedded in its hilt. It was no larger than a thumb, yet it hummed with the heavy memory of an entire forest. As shadows coalesced from the gloom, he didn't chant or draw circles; he simply focused his will. The air shuddered, then tore open as a pillar of fire erupted from the blade, painting the smog-choked sky in a brilliant, fleeting dance of orange and gold.

Materia slots into equipment sockets to grant access to magic, summons, commands, support effects, or passive stat boosts. Unlike static tools, Materia is living energy: it 'levels up' with use, shifting its hue from emerald green to a deep crimson as it gains experience and unlocks the ability to link with other stones for amplified power. Strategic placement is key. Linking Magic with Support Materia can turn a single-target spell into a devastating area-of-effect blast or restore health across the party. Command Materia linked with support can unlock unique battle maneuvers like 'All' or 'HP Absorb'. Yet, this symbiosis demands caution; the planet itself reacts to abuse, and channeling such raw Lifestream energy takes a physical toll on the untrained. True mastery lies not just in mastering combinations, but in harmonizing one's will with the flow of the world.

• Materia colors strictly indicate their category (e.g., Green for Magic, Purple for Independent), while mastery is tracked numerically by AP accumulation without visible star ratings on the item interface.
• The Cetra, an ancient race, were naturally able to communicate with the planet without needing Materia.
• Certain rare Materia, like the Holy Summon Materia (Red), are unique artifacts that cannot be created through standard means; notably, there is no Phoenix Summon Materia in Final Fantasy VII canon.
