Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals is an anime OVA released in Japan as simply Final Fantasy. It serves as a direct sequel set two hundred years after the events of Final Fantasy V on Planet R. In this future era, three of the four crystals have been stolen, leaving only one remaining. The story introduces new heroes Prettz and Linally who must face a rising evil named Deathgyunos from the Black Moon. Originally released across four thirty-minute episodes in Japan between March and July 1994, the series was distributed in North America by Urban Vision on two VHS volumes in 1997 and 1998. To date, no Blu-ray or other format release has occurred following the initial video distribution.

Two centuries after the original heroes of Final Fantasy V became legends, the world of Planet R faces a new threat. Three of the four crystals have been stolen, disrupting the balance of the land. A powerful wizard named Ra Devil seeks to gain the power of the Void for his own ambition. He steals Cid's brain to utilize its knowledge regarding the four crystals. Once he succeeds in this theft, he assumes his true form known as Deathgyunos, rising from the Black Moon to be dealt with by a new generation. The original heroes are now part of history, while the remaining Wind Crystal holds the fate of the world in the hands of those who protect it.
In Their Own Story
The narrative begins when Mid, the grandson of Cid from Final Fantasy V and now returning as a ghost, contacts two new protagonists: Prettz, a headstrong young swordsman, and Linally, an apprentice summoner. Prettz rides a motorcycle and wields a nodachi and spiked bombs, while Linally is a brave, blue-haired girl descended directly from Bartz. She can currently only conjure chocobos but becomes the vessel for the Wind Crystal. Their journey leads them to meet Rouge, a scantily-clad sky pirate captain obsessed with shiny objects who initially attempts to take the crystal, and Valkus, the bumbling yet fiercely loyal general of the Tycoon air force. Together they confront Ra Devil before he fully transforms into Deathgyunos.
Reader's Guide
This OVA was produced by NTT Publishing with animation by Madhouse under the title Final Fantasy. It premiered in Japan across four episodes on VHS from March to July 1994. The North American English dub was released by Urban Vision as two volumes: Volume 1 containing the "Wind Chapter" and "Fire Chapter" dropped on December 9, 1997, followed by Volume 2 with the "Dragon Chapter" and "Star Chapter" on February 3, 1998. A boxed set arrived on November 17, 1998. The score was composed by Masahiko Sato, featuring cues from Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy V soundtrack, including the opening and Chocobo theme. Supporting media included two soundtracks released May 21 and July 21, a guidebook on September 1, and a two-volume manga adaptation released December 2.
