Kuja

Lore & Background

Kuja was created by a man named Garland on the planet Terra with the specific intention of replacing the souls of Gaia's inhabitants. Designed as an artificial lifeform called a Genome, Kuja possessed only a limited lifespan. To secure immortality and overthrow Garland, he sought the four shards of Alexander, a powerful Eidolon. He manipulated Queen Brahne of Alexandria by supplying her with Black Mages—soldiers produced via mist from the Iifa Tree—to conquer other kingdoms. After Brahne attempted to kill him using the Eidolon Bahamut, Kuja seized control of the airship Invincible and killed Brahne instead. Upon learning he was merely an "Angel of Death" meant to be replaced once Zidane matured, Kuja's despair turned to madness. He usurped Garland on Terra, entered a Trance state using captive souls, and destroyed Terra in his attempt to erase existence.

In Their Own Story

Kuja first encounters the protagonist Zidane in Burmecia after he and General Beatrix destroy the kingdom. Later, he suggests to Queen Brahne that she extract Eidolons from Princess Garnet, leading to the destruction of Cleyra. When Brahne tries to kill him with Bahamut, Kuja takes control of the airship Invincible to kill her, then attempts to use the ship to command Alexander. Garland intervenes, forcing the Invincible to destroy Alexander and Alexandria. Captured by Kuja while pursuing him, Zidane is promised freedom for his friends in exchange for retrieving an artifact, though Kuja intends to kill them anyway. After failing to extract Eidolons from Eiko, Kuja realizes he can use Trance instead of Eidolons to defeat Garland. On Terra, after defeating the heroes and usurping Garland, Kuja destroys the planet before the Genomes escape. He is later found at the Iifa Tree by Zidane. In their final battle, Kuja attempts to take the heroes down with him upon defeat, which summons Necron, an entity attempting to destroy existence as mercy. After Necron is defeated, Kuja uses his remaining power to return the heroes outside before dying.

Reader's Guide

Kuja appears in Final Fantasy IX as its main antagonist, initially posing as a manipulative figure controlling Queen Brahne and her Black Mage army. Players first encounter him in Burmecia following the kingdom's destruction by Beatrix. His strategy involves eliminating threats and manipulating various powers to his end. As the story progresses, he becomes a direct combatant using high-tier black magic and the Invincible airship. In the final acts, Kuja enters a "Trance" state, transforming his appearance with massive wings to become a more powerful entity capable of defeating Zidane and allies on Terra. His ultimate battle takes place at the Iifa Tree, where he fights Zidane directly. Defeating him triggers the arrival of Necron, requiring players to survive this additional encounter before the story concludes.
