Rinoa is the daughter of General Caraway and Julia Heartilly. As the "princess" of the Timber resistance, she first meets Squall at the SeeD inauguration ball, charming him into dancing before hiring him for her faction's mission. After failing to assassinate Sorceress Edea, Rinoa joins Squall's group permanently. Her journey takes a dark turn when Ultimecia possesses her body after losing control of Edea. This possession causes Rinoa to fall into a coma-like state and allows Ultimecia to release Sorceress Adel from an orbital prison. Once Ultimecia abandons her, Rinoa survives but inherits Edea's magical powers, becoming a sorceress herself. Fearful of this new power, the Esthar government imprisons her until Squall stages a rescue mission on the Ragnarok spaceship. In the game's ending, she reunites with Squall and kisses him on the Balamb Garden balcony.
