Prior to the incident, Nibelheim was a quiet, isolated mountain town known for its connection to the Shinra reactor built into Mt. Nibel. When reports of strange monsters near the reactor surfaced, Shinra dispatched a team led by Sephiroth and accompanied by Cloud, who had recently joined SOLDIER as an infantryman but was often mistaken for a member due to his equipment and demeanor. The journey up the mountain revealed Sephiroth's descent into madness after discovering ancient texts in the ruined village of Nibelheim that claimed he was not human, but the result of an experiment using cells from an alien entity known as Jenova.

The wind howled through the charred beams of what used to be a home. Smoke choked the air, tasting of ash and copper. Cloud stood frozen, his sword heavy in a hand that felt numb, watching the man he once idolized step over the burning threshold. Sephiroth's eyes were no longer filled with heroism but with a cold, alien detachment. 'I am not human,' the silver-haired warrior whispered to the flames, his voice echoing like a death knell for the world they knew. Behind them, the reactor hummed ominously, indifferent to the tragedy unfolding in its shadow.

Reader's Guide

The incident begins when Sephiroth, leading an investigation team into Mt. Nibel, discovers the truth about his origins in the Shinra mansion's library. Consumed by rage and a distorted sense of destiny, he returns to Nibelheim and sets the village ablaze, killing many residents including Cloud's mother. In a desperate confrontation at the reactor entrance, Sephiroth is seemingly killed when Cloud throws him into the Lifestream-infused mako pool below. However, the aftermath reveals a darker truth. Tifa Lockhart, a childhood friend who witnessed the event, finds both Cloud and Zack Fair, a true SOLDIER 1st Class who had been with them, critically injured in the reactor. Sephiroth's body was not destroyed but merged with the Lifestream. The surviving Shinra forces, led by Professor Hojo, capture the two survivors for experiments involving Mako infusion and Jenova cells. During five years of captivity, Cloud dies from his injuries, while Zack survives. To fill the void in Cloud's shattered mind, his memories merge with those of Zack and the events he witnessed. When Zack eventually escapes with Cloud, they are intercepted by Shinra troops; Zack sacrifices himself so Cloud can reach Midgar. This event fundamentally alters history, as Cloud joins AVALANCHE believing he is a 1st Class SOLDIER, setting in motion the chain of events that will save and destroy the planet.
