Upon learning he possessed an expiration date—a mere ten-year lifespan—he rebelled against his creators, seeking to usurp their power and achieve godhood through the legendary summoning of Ark.

The truth unravels when Zidane's party reaches Terra, discovering they are refugees from a dying world. There, Kuja learns he was designed solely to harvest souls for Terra's rebirth and that his life is limited. Consumed by rage and existential despair at the realization that he is a disposable tool, he turns on his creator, Garland. Seizing control of the Invincible airship, Kuja attempts to use the Crystal's power to summon Ark and destroy Gaia; if he cannot live forever, no one else shall exist. The party pursues him through Terra's ruins into the Crystal World. In a final confrontation against the fabric of reality itself, Kuja is defeated by Zidane. Defiant to the end, he attempts to shatter the Crystal, but his soul dissolves within it, finding peace as the cycle resets.
