Lightning's narrative arc begins in Final Fantasy XIII when she attempts to save her sister Serah, leading to her selection by divine powers to destroy Cocoon. As a L'Cie, she struggles with the burden of her Focus while protecting Hope Estheim and clashing with Snow Villiers due to their differing temperaments. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, her role shifts dramatically; she appears as a supporting character acting as the protector of the Goddess Etro within Valhalla, existing somewhat separately from the main party's time-traveling adventures. Her story concludes in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, where she returns as the sole protagonist to save humanity from a dying world. The developers aimed to portray her here as deeply vulnerable and darker than before, having lost much of what she held dear. Initially designed as a placeholder name 'Averia' before settling on Éclair (or Claire in English) to avoid pastry associations, she enters the story as a disciplined soldier. Her early design included Asian-looking facial features and silver hair, which were altered to pink hair and less distinct features to balance her femininity with her athletic build. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, her outfit was redesigned by Isamu Kamikokuryo based on Norse valkyries, featuring feather motifs to represent her light and delicate side, reflecting her transcended human limits. By Lightning Returns, Nomura designed a leather bodysuit with spinal column patterns for her final battle, emphasizing strength. Her Eidolon, Odin, evolved from a father figure in the first game to a friend she could show deeper feelings to. The story culminates not with a reunion of allies, as considered by some staff, but with Toriyama's insistence on her solitary existence as the protector of the dying world.
