Noctis

The crown prince of Lucis destined to reclaim the Crystal and save his world from darkness.

Noctis Lucis Caelum, known simply as "Noct," is the main protagonist of Square Enix's Final Fantasy XV. Originally conceived for the spin-off project Final Fantasy Versus XIII, he serves as the crown prince and protector of Lucis. His mission is to reclaim his country's Crystal from the Niflheim empire and become the True King of legend to save his world from darkness. Created by Tetsuya Nomura, Noctis was designed to differ from previous silent Final Fantasy heroes, featuring an asymmetric style influenced by the fashion house Roen. His journey involves appearances in expanded media and crossover titles like Puzzle & Dragons and Tekken 7.

Lore & Background

Noctis's full name loosely translates from Latin as "Light of [the] Night Sky," with his nickname meaning "of the Night." His design reflects a tragic tone intended for Versus XIII, where he was one of four controllable characters before becoming the sole playable protagonist in Final Fantasy XV. His outfit was designed by Hiromu Takahara to look like someone from a high-class public house, using an asymmetrical style and "jet black" coloring to mirror the game's atmosphere. A formal suit designed for Versus XIII was retained when the project rebranded. The character model underwent revisions by Yusuke Naora to appear more realistic with facial blemishes, while his hair was styled to look ordered from the front but wild from the rear using a technique first seen in the Agni's Philosophy demo.

In Their Own Story

Noctis is portrayed as a prince who initially hides his shyness behind a cold exterior. Director Hajime Tabata noted that Noctis's cool mannerisms stem from a lonely childhood and a fear of losing those closest to him, driving him to fulfill expectations and bring happiness to others. The narrative marks a major departure for Japanese role-playing games by depicting Noctis aging during the course of the story. To design his older features, the team used photographs of war veterans and actors, ensuring his face resembled his father, Regis Lucis Caelum, to reflect their relationship. His powers originally associated with the goddess Etro were reworked as the game moved away from Fabula Nova Crystallis terminology, though he retained abilities like warping across battlefields and summoning weapons via the "Armiger" power.

Reader's Guide

Gameplay development saw Noctis transition from being the only character in Eos who could use magic to having his companions also utilize it. His signature weapon is the Engine Blade, a piece of gear developed early in the Versus XIII phase. Noctis's eyes change color from blue to red during specific story and gameplay scenes related to magic. The Ring of the Lucii, described as central to the game's story, was established early on, while his gloves were noted as being for design purposes. In the final product, Noctis faces a rival in Ardyn Izunia; their relationship is unique because they start on friendly terms before developing mutual hatred. A version of an aged Noctis was incorporated into a new post-game logo designed by Yoshitaka Amano at the request of his Japanese voice actor.
