Lightning's journey begins in Cocoon, where she serves as a former military member before becoming a Pulse L'Cie. After Serah is branded an enemy, Lightning attempts to save her and is chosen by divine powers to destroy Cocoon. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, she reappears as a supporting character acting as the protector of the Goddess Etro in Valhalla. Her role expands significantly in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, where she sets out to save the people of a dying world. The narrative explores whether Lightning is happy after the events of XIII, with developers aiming to portray her as deeply vulnerable and having lost much in life. In this final chapter, she is depicted as transcending human limits, making it difficult to depict her as a normal person, while her outfit reflects a valkyrie-inspired design representing her light and delicate side.

In Their Own Story

In the original game, Lightning's personality was conceived before the narrative was finalized, characterized by a cold demeanor that clashed with Snow Villiers' outspokenness. She originally possessed a flirtatious aspect transferred to Oerba Yun Fang when the character changed from male to female. Her relationship with Hope Estheim highlights her development as she protects him. In Lightning Returns, the team wanted to show Lightning in different lights, moving away from her static personality. Producer Yoshinori Kitase suggested expanding her vulnerability, resulting in a portrayal of a character who feels like 'a puppet' without her real self inside due to her losses. The story begins and ends with Lightning alone, as director Motomu Toriyama wished for the narrative to focus on her solo role rather than meetings with allies. Her Eidolon, Odin, was intended to appear as a father figure but evolved into a friend she could show deeper feelings to.

Reader's Guide

Lightning's design goal was to create a character less feminine in appearance and personality than previous Final Fantasy heroines. Her final hair color changed from blond or silver to pink to reflect femininity and counterbalance her athletic body. Her weapon in XIII, the Blazefire Saber (Blaze Edge in Japanese), mirrors the Eidolon's ability to transform into various shapes. For Lightning Returns, her outfit was designed by Tetsuya Nomura with 'strength' as the main guideline, resembling a leather bodysuit with spinal column patterns and colored red and white. Her in-game model was rebuilt from the ground up, with enlarged breasts and outfits designed to present her more femininely, inspired by Yoshitaka Amano's designs. Motion capture was performed by Naho Nakashima, who described Lightning as 'a precious existence'. Across speaking appearances, she is voiced by Ali Hillis in English and Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese.
